  Descirption: Many of the ideas that appear in Arnold’s Preface of to his collection of poems and in his later essays are suggested in the letters that Arnold wrote to his friend Arthur Hugh is of the Preface reveals a poet who found a theoretical basis for poetry (by which he means literature in general) in the dramas of the Greek tragedians, .   Arthur Hugh Clough himself was in Rome in during the siege so was writing from personal experience, which explains why the parts of the poem that deal with the conflict – such as Claude’s account of witnessing a priest being killed and Mary’s description of Garibaldi riding into the city – feel vivid and authentic.
